Candida Baker
Candida Baker is the author of numerous books, including the seminal 'Yacker - Australian Writers Talk About Their Work' series, published by Picador over ten years between 1985-1995. Her fiction includes two novels, Women and Horses, (Picador) published in the US and Australia, and The Hidden, published by Knopf. The title story of her collection of short stories, The Powerful Owl, also Picador, won several awards, and has been published in numerous anthologies. Baker is also the author of three children's books, The Baby Angel Counting Book, I Know That and Belinda the Ninja Ballerina. Baker's numerous anthologies include The Penguin Book of the Horse and The Wisdom of Women. Her most recent book, The Heart of a Horse, was published in 2021 by Murdoch Books in Australia and the UK. As a journalist Baker has worked as a feature writer on The Age for seven years, arts editor on the Sydney Morning Herald and editor of The Weekend Australian Magazine. Baker's feature stories and book reviews frequently appear in The Good Weekend magazine, the SMH and The Age. Baker has always had a keen interest in the visual arts, and has an MA in Art History from the University of Adelaide. Baker also project-manages corporate books for companies wanting a specialised publication. Baker lives in the hills behind Byron Bay with her husband, a herd of horses and the family's French Bulldog, Willow. She is an Equine Facilitated Learning practitioner and also runs an equine charity, Equus Alliance.
